Human Judgment

The Age of Intelligence Does Not Eliminate the Professional. It Makes Professional Judgment More Consequential.

As AI takes on more authority, the professional judgment of those who oversee, interpret, and authorize becomes more — not less — consequential.

Proposed Principle

The EII Five Duties of Human Professional Judgment define the proposed principles that should govern how professionals exercise judgment in an AI-enabled enterprise.

Proposed EII Professional Practice Principles

Validation

Verify that AI outputs are grounded in evidence, correct in context, and fit for their intended purpose.

Contextual Interpretation

Interpret AI outputs within the full enterprise, operational, and human context — not in isolation.

Proportional Judgment

Match the weight of decisions to their consequence, risk, and reversibility.

Documented Escalation

Escalate conditions that exceed the AI's authority, competence, or safe operating boundaries — and document the escalation.

Human Authorization

Ensure that consequential actions require human authorization where appropriate, and that this authority is never fully abdicated.

Until Formally Approved

These principles are proposed EII Professional Practice Principles. They are not yet approved EII standards and should not be represented as such.

AI Professional Opinion

EII is developing the concept of an AI Professional Opinion: 'Based upon the defined scope, evidence, methodology, limitations, and applicable EII Professional Practice requirements, it is my professional opinion that...' This is an emerging EII research concept. EII does not currently claim statutory authority for such opinions.

Never Permit These Claims

'This AI is completely safe.' 'This system cannot fail.' 'This system is unbiased.' 'This company is AI compliant everywhere.' These claims are never appropriate.
